Penguin Random House UK is launching Flipper, an innovative online book recommendation engine to make picking the perfect gift online quicker and easier this Christmas.

Penguin Flipper allows visitors to use filters such as the age and personality of their loved ones or the genre or setting of book to help them choose the right books as gifts for the festive season.

Whether the intended recipient is an adult who’s into thrills, a teen who is an adrenaline junkie or a 9-12-year old who likes a fright, Flipper delivers tailored recommendations they will love from a range of 400 physical adult, young adult and children’s books that include big autumn releases, beautiful gift books, backlist and audiobooks – all perfect for the Christmas market.

Penguin Flipper, which will be live during the festive gifting period, is a response to significant consumer demand for personal book recommendations through Penguin Random House UK’s weekly #AskPenguin Twitter feature. Readers have requested almost 2,000 personal recommendations online from the publisher since #AskPenguin launched in August.

Penguin Random House co-created Flipper with book-lovers who provided in-depth, in-person insight and tested the recommendation engine throughout development. This consumer testing was one part of Penguin Random House’s ‘sprint’-based approach to digital innovation, which saw a dedicated team of its digital and consumer experts develop Penguin Flipper from idea to prototype over the course of five days.
