Jack Black and Samira Wiley to narrate Minecraft: The Island by Max Brooks
Penguin Random House UK Audio will publish two complete versions of the first official Minecraft novel: one voiced by Jack Black (Shallow Hal, School of Rock) and the other voiced by Samira Wiley (Orange is the New Black, The Handmaid’s Tale).
Minecraft: The Island, written by #1 New York Times bestselling author Max Brooks, sees two audiobooks sold separately with different covers, so that listeners can choose their own narrative—one told in a male voice or one told in a female voice. Two editions, two narrators, one thrilling story.
The gender-neutral protagonist meant that a creative approach needed to be taken for the audiobook. Dan Zitt, VP, Content Production for Penguin Random House US said:
“This book is not just for fans of Minecraft but for anyone who read Treasure Island or Robinson Crusoe. Only Jim Hawkins and Robinson Crusoe have been replaced with Samira Wiley and Jack Black. I listened to both recordings and I would encourage anyone to do the same. They both bring something different to Max’s book, but are equally impressive audiobooks.”
The casting was revealed by Max Brooks on social media last night with some great photos of both actors in the studio, to wild excitement from his fans.
Minecraft: The Island will be published simultaneously with Penguin Random House in the US on the 18 July, with both audiobooks available from that date.
