In tribute to Philip Roth, one of the most acclaimed writers of his generation

Jonathan Cape author Philip Roth has died at the age of 85. The author of 31 books, including iconic titles such as Portnoy's Complaint and The Plot Against America, he was one of the most acclaimed writers of his generation, winning the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award twice each and the PEN/Faulkner Award three times.

He also won the 1997 Pulitzer Prize for American Pastoral and the Man Booker International Prize for in 2011, in recognition for his body of work. In a New York Times list, published in 2005, naming the 25 best works of American fiction of the past 25 years, six of the novels were Roth’s: American PastoralThe CounterlifeOperation ShylockSabbath’s TheatreThe Human Stain and The Plot Against America.

In tribute, Dan Franklin, Associate Publisher, Jonathan Cape, said: "To my immense good fortune, I arrived at Cape just as Philip Roth was beginning the extraordinary final period of his career, producing a sequence of novels that cemented his place as one the greatest American novelists of the twentieth century. It began with Sabbath’s Theater, and continued all the way through American PastoralI Married a Communist and The Human Stain, to Everyman and Nemesis. Now like everyone else I am waiting for Blake Bailey’s biography."
