More About Audio

Penguin Random House Audio is the UK’s leading audiobook publisher. We create recordings for a wide range of titles; children’s and adult, fiction and non-fiction, commercial and literary.

We’ve won prizes – including Audie awards and Audiobook Producer of the Year – and our casting and production skills have been highly praised; from our award-winning recording of The Girl on the Train (over 250,000 audiobooks sold), to helping to seamlessly publish John le Carré’s The Pigeon Tunnel across audio, print and ebook.

We work with the very best acting talent to create truly memorable audiobooks – from world-class narrators like Sean Barrett and Daniel Weyman to household names like Helen Mirren and Emilia Fox. And listeners love our innovative recordings, like the award-winning full-cast audiobook of Sylvain Neuvel’s Waking Gods, which features 11 different voices. We also publish BBC Audio’s large and prestigious list, and the iTunes no. 1 Penguin Podcast.

With digital audio now the fastest growing area of publishing, and a list that accounts for more than half of the physical market, we love working with you to create memorable experiences for our growing audience of listeners.

The Penguin Podcast

The iTunes #1 podcast, hosted by David Baddiel, Paul Smith and Konnie Huq, delves into the intimate lives of Penguin Random House’s authors in fortnightly episodes. With guests ranging from Zadie Smith to Johnny Marr to Clare Balding, the podcast presents conversations unlike any other.

Case Studies

We produce award-winning audiobooks

Each of our recordings is tailored to create the best possible recording of an author’s work and so we’re always delighted when critics reward that hard work. In 2017 two Penguin Random House audiobooks have won New York Radio Awards. Our brilliant recording of So, Anyway… by John Cleese - brought to life by John’s superb narration and featuring a cameo from Michael Palin and never-before-heard content from Monty Python sketches - won Gold in the Best Non-fiction Audiobook category. Our full-cast adaptation of Sleeping Giants by Canadian science-fiction novelist Sylvain Neuvel was commended for Best Ensemble Narration, as well as being shortlisted in the Science Fiction category in the 2017 Audie awards.

We do things differently

From our casting decisions to our marketing, we do things differently, and we’re always looking for new and exciting ways to connect our audiences with books and authors. This year we achieved an industry-first by live-streaming Stephen Fry from our audiobook studio to Facebook, allowing fans to watch him narrate his audiobook. We commissioned a short behind-the-scenes documentary to bring viewers into the studio to see exactly how much care and craft goes into our recordings, which featured Emilia Fox and Julian Rhind-Tutt.

We have produced audiobooks with exclusive content, for example, Eddie Izzard’s memoir Believe Me, which is longer than the physical edition due to Eddie’s unique narration style and conversational tone. We also attract the highest calibre of acting talent: from Derek Jacobi lending his voice to Doctor Who short stories, to Andrew Scott reading Roald Dahl and Benedict Cumberbatch narrating Casanova, we are dedicated to creating quality content for every title.

We create bestsellers

We’re proud to publish some of the biggest bestsellers in the industry. From smash-hit novels like The Girl on the Train – our biggest selling audiobook ever – to serious non-fiction like The Chimp Paradox and Sapiens, we publish audiobooks to suit every taste across literary and commercial, fiction and non-fiction.

The Amazing Book is Not on Fire was supported by a binaural trailer and promoted by its authors – YouTube stars Dan and Phil – making it our fastest-selling audiobook ever. We also launch debut authors into audio: My Husband’s Wife by Jane Corry was so successful that we published the audio edition of her second book Blood Sisters ahead of the paperback, creating a unique opportunity to promote this format.
